Different takes on violence are offered by Walt Disney and Quentin Tarantino as we run the gamut in this week’s movies on TV.
Today
“Space Cowboys,” 9 p.m., TNT. A farfetched but breezily enjoyable picture about elderly astronauts pressed into emergency service. Clint Eastwood, who also directed, is joined by Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald Sutherland. 2000.
Saturday
“Goldfinger,” 10:05 a.m., Encore. Sean Connery was in full command of his license to kill by the time this third James Bond was made. Shirley Bassey belts out the title tune. 1964.
“Sling Blade,” 8 p.m., Bravo. A gutsy and memorable story about a developmentally disabled man (played by director Billy Bob Thornton) released from an institution for a few fateful days. 1996.
Sunday
“Bambi,” 5 p.m., CBUT. One of the finest of all Disney animated features, this tale of a young deer in the forest remains a compelling and visually stunning movie, somehow capturing the life cycle in its relatively brief running time. 1942.
“Kill Bill, Vol. 1,” 8 p.m., Encore. The opening act of Tarantino’s smorgasbord of B-movie action, all about a blood-spattered bride (Uma Thurman) and her very roundabout revenge. A head-spinning experience, with a wickedly tantalizing ending. 2003.
Monday
“The Ring,” 9 p.m., Channel 5. The Americanization of a Japanese horror hit becomes a credible movie on its own, as a Seattle reporter (Naomi Watts) stumbles across the story of a most unlucky videotape. Watch it at your own risk. 2002.
Tuesday
“Pickup on South Street,” 7 p.m., Fox Movies. One of the best movies from director Samuel Fuller (“The Big Red One”) is a tough number about a slippery pickpocket (Richard Widmark) caught in a spy racket. 1953.
“Village of the Damned,” 9:30 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. A spooky near-classic about a remote village visited by some force that produces very unusual children. 1960.
Wednesday
“Kagemusha,” 10 p.m., Fox Movies. A majestic epic from late in the career of director Akira Kurosawa, in which a minor criminal is given a chance to impersonate a warlord – and transform his own life. 1980.
Thursday
“The Asphalt Jungle,” 9:30 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. Influential caper movie, directed by John Huston with all the fatalism and end-of-the-road atmosphere he could muster. Great cast of character actors, led by Sterling Hayden. 1950.
