Bazaar, festival season arrives

Now that the weather has turned decidedly colder and the Halloween fun has passed, the time of year to enjoy indoor autumn activities like holiday bazaars and fundraisers is gaining momentum.

The first batch of many such activities commences this weekend.

For starters, the 13th annual “Santa Hop and Auction” takes place today, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at The Manor, 13032 Admiralty Way in Lynnwood.

All of the profits from this charity event featuring dinner, dancing and a live auction will go to the Forgotten Children’s Fund, which benefits thousands of local children. Admission is $25 per person. Those in attendance will be treated to Capt’n Kenny’s classic rock music, some Caribbean swing and soca music, and Buddy Holly, Elvis and the Blues Brothers’ tribute bands.

A live auction, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will offer such items as Argosy Christmas Cruise tickets, 5th Avenue theater tickets, one-year memberships to the Seattle Aquarium, opportunities for police ride-alongs, and much more.

For more information about the benefit, call 206-992-7117. To learn more about the Forgotten Children’s Fund, see www.forgottenchildrensfund.org.

Saturday is a day for kids to have some literary fun at several King County library branches, as authors read aloud old classics as well as some new stories, and many well-known characters arrive for face-to-face visits.

To find the location that’s right for your family, check www.kcls.org to view each branch’s specific schedule.

In general, the authors will read or give other performances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and actual story times will occur at 12:30 p.m. Between those times, children can meet some of their favorite costumed characters, like Winnie the Pooh, the Stinky Cheese Man, the Cat in the Hat or Curious George.

Finally, from noon to 7 p.m. today and Saturday at 1714 18th Ave. in Seattle, the 43rd annual Polish holiday bazaar will present many ways for visitors to enjoy cultural holiday fun.

In addition to serving traditional Polish meals throughout both days of this free event, take-home entrees also will be available, including pickle soup and borscht, cabbage rolls and homemade pastries.

“Vivat Musica,” a choir group whose members have just returned from a choral festival in Poland, will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday.

In addition, craft items including pottery, linens, Christmas ornaments, greeting cards, lotions and more will be on display and available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the Polish Cultural Center. For more information, call 206-322-3020.
