A nod toward politics in this week’s movies on TV, with a candidate-turned-rapper, which is maybe what we need.
Today
“Toy Story 2,” 8 and 9:45 p.m., Disney. The Pixar animation people can even do sequels right, as this funny and emotional follow-up to the computer-made hit proves. 1999.
“The Creature From the Black Lagoon,” 9 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. The sci-fi goodie that introduced the gill-man, bothering an expedition to the Amazon. Or maybe they’re bothering him. 1954.
Saturday
“The Royal Tenenbaums,” 8 p.m., FX. The messed-up lives of a family of New Yorkers, seen by the amused eye of director Wes Anderson (“Rushmore”). Awesome cast includes Gene Hackman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller and Bill Murray. 2001.
Sunday
“Bulworth,” 8 p.m., Comedy Central. Warren Beatty concocted this syncopated satire about a politico who slips a cog and turns into a hip-hop truth-teller. It doesn’t all work, but there’s enough crazy stuff to push it along. Halle Berry co-stars. 1998.
Monday
“The Princess Bride,” 8 p.m., Bravo. Once upon a time there was a fairy-tale movie that sent up all the conventions of fairy-tale movies. William Goldman’s novel gets an especially good treatment from swashbucklers Mandy Patinkin and Christopher Guest. 1987.
Tuesday
“The 39 Steps,” 8:30 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. What are the 39 steps? You’ll have to handcuff yourself to this splendidly entertaining Alfred Hitchcock thriller to find out. It’s one of his “wrong man” movies. 1935.
Wednesday
“Edward Scissorhands,” 8 p.m., Fox Movies. An unexpectedly sweet-natured fantasy from director Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp giving early notice of his skill with offbeat roles – he’s a boy with blades for hands. 1990.
“Mississippi Masala,” 8 p.m., Oxygen. Director Mira Nair, whose new one is “Vanity Fair,” made this underrated little romance about a southern man (Denzel Washington) and East Indian woman (Sarita Choudhury). 1992.
Thursday
“The Others,” 9 p.m., TNT. A woman tending to her delicate children becomes aware of strange noises in their big old house. Nicole Kidman is exactly suited for this kind of nervous ghost story. 2001.
