My thoughts: This beer has one of the best names for a beer I’ve ever heard. The beer isn’t too bad either.
Named after Al Capone’s Tommy gun, the New England-style IPA is a juicy, hop-forward IPA with a pillowy mouth-feel. Breath deeply when you’re handed this beer and you’ll get a nose of big juicy fruit, including strawberry and melon.
At Large Brewing recently hired its first full-time employee, Dan Custer, who is from Boston and has relatives in Vermont. He brought some beers back from a recent visit and he and At Large head brewer and owner Jim Weisweaver taste-tested, picking out the qualities they liked best.
They then got down to work, brewing a few batches that were close but not quite what they wanted. After some more “research,” they got it dialed in, balancing the hops, especially large amounts of Citra and Mosaic, until it was perfect.
Weisweaver said the name was courtesy of a regular customer, Chris Stuart, who told him about The Chicago Typewriter nickname for Capone’s favorite weapon. Weisweaver thought the concept was perfect for At Large’s 1920s outlaw motif and promised him he’d turn it into a beer.
From the brewery: Unlike its namesake, this one is all goodness. Featuring Mosaic and Citra hops, how can you go wrong? Light in color with a nice haze complement this New England-inspired IPA.
