Fresh Hop Centennial IPA, Lazy Boy Brewing, Everett
Style: IPA
Stats: 6.5 percent ABV, 50 IBU
Available: On tap at the brewery and select taprooms in Seattle
My thoughts: Shawn Loring and his crew at Lazy Boy brought back 95 pounds of Centennial hops from their trip to Toppenish in the Yakima Valley two weeks ago to be used in this beer. All the hops went directly from the van into the mash tun.
The result is a drinkable, almost sessionable, fresh hop IPA with a pop of a hop finish that reminds you it’s a fresh hop creation. Loring said he was surprised at the slight hop aroma, but that he was happy with the deep flavor and the drinkability of the beer.
Loring used a little flaked rye to round out the malt bill, which also included Two-Row, White Wheat, Crystal 60 and Munich malts.
The beer is the first of four fresh hop IPAs that Lazy Boy will brew this season. The Citra fresh hop IPA will be on tap soon. I had a quick taste of it straight out of the fermenter and the aroma and flavor — citrusy, tropical — is quite different than the Centennial. Check out both beers at Lazy Boy’s IPA Festival from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at the brewery.
From the brewery: A nicely hopped beer featuring the spiciness of the Centennial hops along with a small amount of flaked rye in the mash. Very drinkable.
