The conversation must have been short. But Tony Bennett turned down Indiana and will remain with Washington State.
Celebrate now. There are better jobs than Indiana coming up. The Hoosier program is in shambles, despite the 25-8 record. Starting guards Armon Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis were booted off the team before Tom Crean took over as head coach. Eric Gordon probably will turn pro, which means Crean will have zero starters coming back. Still, there are no excuses in Bloomington, which wants victories, period.
And don’t forget the likely NCAA sanctions because of Kelvin Sampson’s phone rampage.
Bennett doesn’t need that. He can do better. His situation at WSU is now, for instance.
His name will come up when any job opens. The latest is LSU, which might be more enticing because Bennett’s wife has ties to Baton Rouge. If he turns LSU down, there will be others.
Bennett’s a young, hot coach. Sooner or later, something has to come up that he can’t resist.
