“UNREAL TOURNAMENT III”: The hype behind “Unreal Tournament III” is just, well … unreal.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s a great-looking game.
PROS: Epic has mastered the “Unreal” engine to such a point that it renders beautiful graphics. If they were any prettier I’d ask them to the prom, but the point is that this is just another pretty face at a very crowded dance.
“Unreal Tournament III” is all about online PvP, player-vs.-player. The story mode seems like a last-minute addition that is over all too quickly. The AI is clumsy and enemy units seem more like target practice compared to your human opponents.
Online PvP is where this game both shines and falls flat, at least for me. The weapons offer a wide selection of tools for dispatching your enemy, and I am actually impressed with the maps. Bungee Studios should take note: These maps are worth Master Chief’s metal underoos.
CONS: Online play is where it falls apart. While it is fun and varied, it is just as fun and varied as your “Team Fortress 2” game, or “Halo,” or “Counter Strike,” or “Rainbow 6: Las Vegas.” Sure, “Unreal Tournament III” is the fastest and best graphical representation of the genre, but it lacks real substance to the first-person-shooter field.
“Unreal Tournament III” is meant for online PvP. That’s it. If it’s the highly rendered and visceral destruction of foes you desire, this is for you.
