Night at the opera
Opera fans and newcomers can get a great introduction to Seattle Opera’s presentation of “The End of the Affair” at a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Third Place Books. The opera company will discuss the themes, music and composer of this new opera by Jake Heggie. “The End of the Affair” opens Oct. 15.
Welcome the queen
Illustrator and author Mary Engelbreit brings her collection of “Mary Englebreit’s Mother Goose: One Hundred Best-Loved Verses ” to Third Place at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Pufferbelly party
Children, ages 2 and up, are invited to a free Thomas the Tank Engine party at 10 a.m. SaturdayScott’s Bookstore in Mount Vernon to celebrate Thomas’ 60th anniversary. The hourlong party is a national traveling trunk tour with stories, crafts and treats. Thomas books and toys will be given away and children are invited to wear railroad-themed costumes. Free film
The Everett Public Library is veering a bit from its Second Sundays independent film series to present director Walter Lang’s 1957 classic comedy “Desk Set” starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Tracy is an efficiency expert brought in to computerize a company’s research department headed by Hepburn. The free film will be shown at 2 p.m. Oct. 9 and is an introduction to the Museum of Snohomish County History’s exhibit Yesterday’s Tomorrows, which opens Oct. 22.
