‘Lonigan’ back again
Two recent volumes honor the 2004 centenary of the birth of James T. Farrell, author of the “Studs Lonigan” novels.
The books enjoyed great popularity during the 1930s but were also criticized for their harsh and frank depiction of urban life and street language.
One of the new volumes is “Studs Lonigan, a Trilogy,” which contains the novels “Young Lonigan,” “The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan” and “Judgment Day,” originally published separately between 1932 and 1935. They trace the events of Lonigan’s life on Chicago’s South Side during the 1920s, from the end of World War I to the onset of the Great Depression.
Included is a brief chronology of Farrell’s life, from his birth in Chicago to his death in 1979 at 75. It lists at $35, but does have a bound ribbon bookmark.
Another book, “An Honest Writer: The Life and Times of James T. Farrell,” is Robert K. Landers’ biography based on Farrell’s large collection of private papers as well as other research material and interviews. This one’s $28.95.
