At the library

Local fantasy writer Christine Morgan will read from her novels and talk about the role-playing games she helped to design and write at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen Branch of the Everett Public Library. This free event will introduce you to stories, games and zines you can access.

In the bookstores

Another sci-fi author, Bruce Sterling, drops the sci for his latest novel about post Sept. 11 security and battling cyber-terrorists in “The Zenith Angle.” You can meet this contributing editor of Wired magazine and hear about his book at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Third Place Books. The book’s list price is $24.95.

Scott’s Bookstore in Mount Vernon presents young-adult author Sarah Dessen with her new book, “The Truth About Forever,” at 11 a.m. Saturday. “Forever” is about a teen who’s coping, or not, with her father’s death. The book’s list price is $16.99.

‘Lonigan’ back again

Two recent volumes honor the 2004 centenary of the birth of James T. Farrell, author of the “Studs Lonigan” novels.

The books enjoyed great popularity during the 1930s but were also criticized for their harsh and frank depiction of urban life and street language.

One of the new volumes is “Studs Lonigan, a Trilogy,” which contains the novels “Young Lonigan,” “The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan” and “Judgment Day,” originally published separately between 1932 and 1935. They trace the events of Lonigan’s life on Chicago’s South Side during the 1920s, from the end of World War I to the onset of the Great Depression.

Included is a brief chronology of Farrell’s life, from his birth in Chicago to his death in 1979 at 75. It lists at $35, but does have a bound ribbon bookmark.

Another book, “An Honest Writer: The Life and Times of James T. Farrell,” is Robert K. Landers’ biography based on Farrell’s large collection of private papers as well as other research material and interviews. This one’s $28.95.
