Island time: O. Alan Weltzien, author of “A Father and an Island, Reflections on Loss” will discuss this memoir at 7 p.m. Monday at Snow Goose Bookstore in Stanwood.
Weltzien, who grew up in Bellevue and spent summers at the family cabin on Camano Island, weaves moving memories of his father with a history of Camano Island and the changes he’s seen over the years.

Tough life: Spokane journalist Jim Kershner will talk about his book, “Carl Maxey; A Fighting Life,” from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Everett Library.
Maxey overcame the trials of his childhood, one of only two black children at a Spokane orphanage who were kicked out at age 11, to become first a championship boxer at Gonzaga University and then a prominent civil rights lawyer.
Kershner will sign copies of his book available for sale at the library.
The book lists at $27.95.
