Bronn Journey: Come have a fun time listening to the music

The harpist will perform his Christmas concert on Dec. 18 at the Everett Performing Arts Center.

Bronn Journey’s annual Christmas show, now in its 20th year, has become an Everett tradition.

But each year, he said, there’s always something new. “The music is always different. And the instruments are always different — but it’s the same old me.”

Even though his instrument is the harp, traditionally associated with classical music, he said he doesn’t want people to think it will be a formal event.

The music is presented informally, as if the audience was coming to his house and “having a fun time listening to music,” said Journey, who is from Sultan.

A note to those planning on attending Tuesday’s concert. Tickets are being snapped up fast.

Although most of the concert will be devoted to Christmas music, the first half will include a few songs from the movies, including “The Greatest Showman” and “First Man,” the story of astronaut Neil Armstrong’s journey to the moon.

Part of the concert’s tradition is for audience members to come equipped with jingle bells. Before the song is performed, Journey asks anyone with the bells to join him on stage.

“We’ve had quite a crowd up there in the past,” he said.

During intermission, there’s a donation basket for free brownies, with this year’s proceeds going to the Everett Gospel Mission.

This will be the first year that Journey’s wife, Katherine Journey, won’t be singing at the concert. She will be there playing the keyboard.

Vocals will be performed by a quintet from the group Breath of Aire. Other performers include Diane Tremaine playing cello, Aaron Wartes, on violin, Debbie Gibson, trumpet and flugelhorn, and Sultan High School graduated Ryan Fox on percussion.

Mukilteo orchestra

The Mukilteo Community Orchestra will present a free concert, “An English Christmas.” It begins at 2 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave. in Mukilteo.

A lecture by orchestra conductor Trevor Lutzenhiser is scheduled at 1:20 p.m.

The orchestra will be joined by the 22-member Mukilteo Community Orchestra Chorale, its debut performance with the orchestra.

The group is led by Janet Coe, music director at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church.

The chorale will join the orchestra in performances of “Fantasia on Greensleeves,” and “Fantasia on Christmas Carols,” both composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
