Celebrate Chinese new year at Journeys East

The Year of the Fire Rooster begins Jan. 28 with the Lunar New Year celebration, and you can take part at many local Chinese eateries.

One of the premiere Asian restaurants in Snohomish County is Journeys East at the Tulalip Resort Casino. The restaurant’s regular menu has something for everyone who likes Asian food, with offerings from Japan, Thailand, China, Korea and Vietnam.

This year, Lunar New Year special plates will be served Jan. 27-29 at Journeys East. The meals include drunken chicken, New Year fried fish and stir-fried ginger lobster.

Expect to be greeted by staff wearing Happy New Year tiaras. The main languages spoken in the packed dining room will be Mandarin and Cantonese. And many women will be dressed in elegant red dresses.

For starters, try the Hong You Chao Shou — spicy, delicious pork and shrimp wontons. For your rice or noodle dish, consider the Shanghai stir-fry udon, or the Journeys East fried rice with Chinese pork sausage, egg and vegetables.

The traditional New Year fried fish is a whole pompano (head and tail, too) served with ginger and oyster sauce. The drunken chicken from Shanghai is cooked with ginger, marinated in sweetened rice wine and served cold.

Not sure what the stir-fried ginger lobster is all about, but the name sounds great.

In addition, the casino offers a celebratory Year of the Rooster show at 8 p.m. Jan. 28. Tickets start at $25, and you must be at least 21.
