Chill out at Chelan

Chelan is a town that knows how to embrace the snow and ice of winter. The folks there throw a party.

If you feel like experiencing their positive spin on the season, head over the Cascades from Jan. 14 to 16 for the 25th annual Lake Chelan Winterfest to enjoy the chill, the chili and all the activities.

See single block ice sculptures and snow carvings created by Northwest artists. They will share some of their ice sculpting techniques at a Lil’ Chippers workshop for the kids.

Take the family on a sleigh ride through historic downtown Chelan, which has venues for ice skating and snow games prepared.

There’s a special treat for wine lovers, the Wine Walk through downtown, where winemakers from the Lake Chelan area will set up stations for sampling their products. A limited number of tickets are available online for $30. A Wine Walk ticket includes one Winterfest button ($8 value), one commemorative wine glass and 15 wine tastings.

Throughout the weekend there will be live music, food and hot drinks to warm the soul and body.

On the evening of Jan. 15, there will be a “Fire and Ice” torchlight parade, beach bonfire, polar bear splash and fireworks.

A chili cook-off is set for Jan. 16, and potential participants may read the rules and download an entry form online. Registration for the cook-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Jan. 16.

The weekend is wrapped up with a winemaker dinner.

Be sure to get a Winterfest button online at www.lakechelanwinterfest.com or pick them up at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce. Buttons are $5 in advance, $8 after Thursday. A family four-pack is $18 in advance, $28 after Thursday.

The Winterfest button gives free access to many activities, as well as discounts at local businesses.
