The Sno-King Community Chorale is hitting the big time with a performance in the Big Apple.
The chorale has been invited for the first time to sing at New York’s Carnegie Hall. They will perform at 7 p.m. Monday during “Concert for Peace — Celebrating the Spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr.”
The invitation was by composer Karl Jenkins. The chorale will perform the U.S. premier of Jenkins’ newest work, “Gloria.”
The chorale’s conductor and artistic director Frank DeMiero said Jenkins heard about the chorale after they sang another of his works, “The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace” during a riveting performance last year in Lynnwood.
“I have to say one of the most emotional works I have ever presented was ‘The Armed Man.’ I have never had that kind of emotional response at a concert,” DeMiero said. “About 30 people continued to stay in their seats for about 25 minutes after the concert.
“I asked them if everything was OK, and their response was, ‘Everything is fine, we just need time to reflect and to gather our thoughts. We have been so moved by this production.’ ”
DeMiero said receiving an invitation from a composer is “a major feather in our cap.”
More than 55 members of the chorale will be making the trip to Carnegie to join a number of other choirs from around the world.
Even if they can’t make the trip, local people will have a chance to hear “Gloria.”
Sno-King Community Chorale will perform “Gloria” for the first time on the West Coast at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. March 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. For more information go to www.sno-kingchorale.org or call Kit Hanski at 425-673-1242.
