FORT WORTH, Texas — Country music star Randy Travis was arrested early Monday on suspicion of public intoxication outside a Texas church, authorities said.

Just after midnight, a Sanger police officer investigating a suspicious vehicle outside the First Baptist Church reportedly found Travis with an open bottle of wine and smelling of alcohol, said Tom Reedy, a spokesman for the Denton County Sheriff’s Department.

Travis was booked into the Denton County Jail about 1:30 a.m., Reedy said. He was released several hours later with a Class C misdemeanor citation.

Jail records listed his address in nearby Tioga.

In a statement released to The Associated Press, Travis apologized “for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl.”

Travis, a seven-time Grammy Award winner, is scheduled to start a concert tour Friday in Grand Ronde, Ore., according to his website.

In September, Travis collapsed during a performance of “Three Wooden Crosses” at the Renaissance Worthington hotel in downtown Fort Worth. Several doctors attending the annual Huguley Memorial Medical Center benefit rushed to his aid. Travis’ tour manager later said that Travis had had a bad reaction to allergy medicine he had taken earlier in the day.
