After five seasons ABC’s drama, “Alias,” which was a cult hit from the start but never captured a wider audience, will draw to a close.
The spy drama won seven Emmy Awards and star Jennifer Garner took home a Golden Globe in 2002 for her lead role as CIA agent Sydney Bristow.
ABC president Stephen McPhearson made the announcement today in a press release, eluding to a big sendoff, rather than a quiet cancellation sometime over the summer.
“J.J. Abrams and his team developed characters that were compelling and storylines that were intricate and engaging, and Jennifer and the rest of the cast brought them to life,” McPhearson said. “We owe both the storytellers and the fans a send-off worthy of a show that has been such a big part of the pop culture vernacular.”
McPhearson said Abrams and company have “an amazing story arc” to close out the season.
“‘Alias’ is not going to wind down as it comes to an end,” he said, “it’s going to rev up, and we’re going to make it the event it deserves to be.”
