Cascade Symphony Orchestra presents its children’s concert on Saturday, featuring works by Mozart, Boccherini and the “Carnival of the Animals” performed by Olympic Ballet Theater and narrated by audience favorite Dave Dolacky.
Featured soloists for the symphony are Zachary Kellogg, a home-schooled 13-year-old who will perform the first movement of Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 1 in G.
Also on the bill is Olivia Marckx, 11, who joins the symphony to perform the first movement of Boccherini’s Cello Concerto in B flat major.
Cascade Symphony, under the musical direction of Michael Miropolsky, will perform Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals,” as 45 young dancers — starting at the fourth grade — from the Olympic Ballet Theatre portray chickens, fish, birds, nine fossils and a beautiful dying swan, Olympic artistic director Helen Wilkins said.
“We are just excited for this show,” Wilkins said. “The masks and animals are quite well done and fun.”
The dying swan part of the show “with a gorgeous cello solo” is probably Carnival’s most famous piece, but Wilkins said she likes this revised version that combines the spirited with the classical.
Wilkins added that she didn’t need to hire a guest artist this year for the swan because her student Christine Hamstra was “really ready to handle it and she’s been beautiful.”
Cascade Symphony’s Children’s Concert starts at 3 p.m. Saturday at Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N, Edmonds.
Tickets are $15, $12 and $8. Call 425-776-4938 or go to www.cascadesymphony.org or in person at the Edmonds Bookshop, 111 Fifth Ave. S, Edmonds or at the door.
