CARACAS, Venezuela – Cuba’s ambassador to Venezuela has written a new book exploring the two “revolutions” led by Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.
German Sanchez Otero’s “Cuba and Venezuela: Reflections and Debates” is a 325-page anthology that includes essays, newspaper articles and letters. It traces the history of socialism in Cuba and the increasingly close relationship that has developed between Castro and Chavez.
“In these pages, I offer the commitment, intensity and passion that we Cubans have experienced in Venezuela and on the island during these recent years,” Sanchez Otero told reporters Wednesday at a reception here to launch the book.
Sanchez Otero said one of the reasons he chose to write the book was to refute allegations by Venezuelan opposition leaders that communist-led Cuba has attempted to “Cubanize” this oil-rich South American nation.
Chavez says he is establishing a socialist economic model in Venezuela, but denies allegations that he is copying Cuba’s communist system in the world’s fifth largest oil exporter.
David Duetschmann, president of Ocean Books, based in Australia, said an English version of the book would be available in the United States in about three months.
