Skagit River Shakespeare Festival: This 15th annual season by the troupe features “The Merchant of Venice,” the classic tale of love and money, this time played out in Las Vegas, as well as the rarely produced comedy “Cymbeline,” which is the tale of a king whose daughter has married against his wishes and whose wife plots to seize his crown for her spoiled son. The festival opens July 8 and continues through Aug. 13 at the Rexville Black Rock Amphitheater, 19299 Rexville Grange Road, between Conway and La Conner. Edmonds Driftwood Players: Wade James Theatre, 950 Main St., Edmonds; www.edmondsdriftwoodplayers.org or 425-774-9600, option 3. The seventh annual Festival of Shorts is July 8-10, featuring short plays by playwrights from Florida, Seattle, South Carolina, California, Maine, New York and Missouri. The theme this year is “Paradox.” Audiences pick their favorites and then on the final day, judges select an overall festival winner. July 8 and 9 at 8 p.m., 2 p.m. July 10. Admission is $15. Also, tickets for the 2016-17 season are on sale now. Youth classes available.

Phoenix Theatre: The comedy theater is at 9673 Firdale Ave., Edmonds; 206-533-2000 or www.phoenixtheatreedmonds.org. See “I’m Herbert and Other Short Plays,” directed by Molly Brusewitz, at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, July 22-30 and Aug. 19-28. Tickets range from $12 to $19. The production involves three stories about love at different ages: Young newlywed honeymooners; middle-age dating; and an elderly couple who have been married several times and can’t remember each others’ names. Tickets for the Phoenix 2016-17 season are available now. The shows include “Moon Over Buffalo” and “Crossing Delancey.”
Anderlin Arts: Performances are at the Snohomish County PUD Auditorium, 2320 California, Everett; www.anderlinarts.org. “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” the musical comedy, plays Sept. 15 to 24.
“Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”: The off-Broadway comedy is a one-man fusion of theater and stand-up comedy based on the best selling book by John Gray. See it at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave., Everett. Call 425-258-6766 for ticket information.
Red Curtain: Red Curtain Foundation for the Arts, a nonprofit arts education organization, plans to open a new arts center in Marysville in September. The 2016-17 season at the Red Curtain Community Arts Center features “The Fantasticks,” “Arsenic and Old Lace,” “You Can’t Take It With You,” “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,” “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Noises Off!” Summer classes are available. A fundraising auction is set for Oct. 1.
Theater Schmeater: Two people familiar to Edmonds Driftwood Players audiences, Paul Lewis and Carrisa Miesner Smit, have written an original “chamber” musical “The Crossing” about Amelia Earhart. Ballyhoo Theatre: The musical “Cabaret” will be presented at 7 p.m. July 8 and 9, and 2 p.m. July 10 at Edmonds Heights K-12, 23200 100th Ave W, Edmonds. Set in the shadows of 1931 Berlin during the rise of the Nazi regime, Cabaret explores the relationship between 19 year old nightlife club performer Sally Bowles and young American novelist Cliff Bradshaw. Directed by Shileah Corey, the cast of 17 actors, ages 15-19, represent 14 different schools. Tickets are $7 and are available at the door.

Hula O Lehualani: The Ho’ike, the ninth annual recital, is 4 p.m. July 10 at Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N., Edmonds. All of the Edmonds-based Hula O Lehualani dancers will participate in hula kahiko and ‘auana learned throughout the year.
