Desserts without consequences

If visions of sugarplums are dancing through your head this holiday, but you want to skip the calories, try some of Bliss Soap’s tasty-looking treats.

The small soap manufacturer, with only four employees, makes each deliciously scented product by hand at its Everett manufacturing plant. Co-owner Phillip Wright said he learned the technique from his mother, who made and sold soap when he was younger. He said many customers passing the kiosk inside Northgate Mall look twice because the products, especially the dessert soaps, look and smell so real.

Bliss Soap’s “a la carte menu,” a list of items printed to look like a menu, includes body butters, desserts and appetizers, not to mention bath fizzies, salts and room sprays. Wright said Bliss customizes products, creates mix and match gift packs and sells many seasonal items.

Bliss Soap is in a kiosk at Northgate Mall, 401 NE Northgate Way, Seattle. For information, call 800-289-2547 or visit www.blisssoap.com.

1. Get the blues: A blueberry-scented cupcake features a bath fizzie cake bottom, bubble bath “whipped cream” topping and blueberry-shaped soaps; $9.95.

2. Holiday aromas: Moisturizing body butters and room sprays are available in a variety of holiday scents, including hot buttered rum, cranberry relish, gingerbread or a rustic mistletoe; $16.95 body butter, $12.95 room spray.

3. Smell, don’t eat: Serve up a slice of cinnamon roll soap this Christmas. This hand-rolled treat looks good enough to eat and features decorative berry soaps when sold as a dessert with a plate; $14.95, $12.95 a la carte.

4. Soaps on a stick: Bliss kabobs make great stocking stuffers, but also offer variety and a chance to sample four different desserts soaps, including chocolate-covered strawberry, vanilla spice, cheesecake and dark chocolate; $12.95.

5. Pineapple scrub: Molded from an actual pineapple rind, this slice features a loofah core for exfoliating. Bliss uses seasonal fruits, vegetables, botanicals, herbs and fresh dairy products whenever possible to create natural scents and provide additional exfoliation. Soaps are cut to order, so sample a small piece or take home a large chunk; $5 per 4 to 5 ounce slice.

6. Fizzy fun: Mix and match a bubble bath fizzy crate with hot butter rum, strawberry cheesecake, French chocolate silk and maple-pecan truffle dessert fizzies; $29.95.
