When you want or need a dessert, a quick-fix dirt cake might be just the thing, so here we go again.

Let’s start with this recipe courtesy of Marysville cook Sandi Newton.

“This in reply to Doris Hoblitt’s request,” she says, “and it’s as much fun to make as it is to eat.”

And a very similar version is shared by Pam Ayars of Marysville, who tells us, “This was given to me by my Boeing supervisor years ago for my birthday.

“She fixed it and brought it in in flower pots! It was wonderful!”

Dirt cake

1package Oreo cookies

1cube (1/2 cup) butter or margarine, softened

1package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened

1cup powdered sugar

1teaspoon vanilla

2boxes (4-serving-size) instant chocolate fudge pudding mix

3cups milk

1tub (12 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed

Flower pot

Flowers

Gummy worms

Garden trowel

Crush cookies until they resemble potting soil; set aside.

Cream butter or margarine, cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth and fluffy; set aside.

Combing pudding mix and milk until well blended, then fold in the whipped topping. Gently fold together the cream cheese and pudding mixtures.

To assemble, in the flower pot, layer 1/3 of the crumbs followed by half the pudding mixture, half of remaining crumbs and the rest of the pudding mixture. Top with remaining crumbs and refrigerate 10 to 12 hours.

About 30 minutes before serving, remove from the refrigerator and decorate with flowers and gummy worms. Serve by digging out portions with a trowel.

Makes 10 to 12 servings.

Dirt cake

1package Oreo cookies

1/2cup margarine, softened

1package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened

3/4cup powdered sugar

2packages (4-serving size) instant vanilla pudding mix

2 3/4cups milk

1tub (12 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed

Plastic flower pot

Flowers

Gummy worms

Garden trowel

Thoroughly crush cookies in blender or food processor.

Cream together margarine, cream cheese and sugar.

Combine pudding mix and milk and mix with an electric mixer until thickened; add the margarine mixture and mix well. Fold in the whipped topping.

To assemble, cover the hole in the bottom of the pot, then make several layers of crumbs and pudding mixture, starting and ending with the crumbs.

Garnish with flowers, gummy worms and the trowel.
