Thousands are expected to enjoy good food, a magician and musical acts ranging from Latin jazz and hip hop to steel drums and a gospel choir at the Nubian Jam, set for Saturday at Forest Park in Everett.
The diverse entertainment line-up features Layla Angulo and her Latin Jazz Band, which plays authentic Latin and Afro-Peruvian Jazz. Other regional bands include the reggae band Talismen, the hip-hop groups Dirti Bird and Verce, and rapper Willie Will.
Other acts include Kendall Law, who performs musical comedy sketches, and dance troupes Rose Petals, Beta Nation and OneFammAllStars. Robert Stephens, a magician, also will perform.
More than 10 food vendors will be serving barbecue, Philly cheese steaks, catfish, hotdogs and more.
The Jam is about more than food and entertainment.
Young people need positive direction and a chance to succeed, organizer Ewell Madry said. Madry, president of the Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee, has applied this philosophy to the types of organizations invited to set up educational booths at the Jam.
Some of those organizations include local community colleges, a financial group committed to encouraging minorities to invest money, and the Sno-Isle Natural Food Co-op. Representatives from the Interfaith Association of Snohomish County, which provides assistance to families in need, will also be on hand.
Eric Z. Lucas, an administrative appeals judge, will speak on why it’s important for youth to educate themselves about the law at 11:30 a.m. Everett resident Tameka Alston, a finalist in the Seattle Star Search, will emcee the event.
Rep. David Simpson, D-Everett, will present scholarships from the Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee to local students.
This is the 12th year of the free community festival. The festival name “Nubian Jam” is partly a nod to black heritage and partly because the festival began as “just something to do – black people coming together,” Madry said.
