Decorating with wallpaper is always in style, and today, there are so many wallpaper books out there that your choices are almost limitless. Let’s explore some interesting ideas that you can try at home.
Have you noticed that in design magazines and in architectural magazines wallpaper is being used more and more on ceilings? It is an inventive way to decorate.
One way to decorate your ceiling would be to add a tray design. A tray ceiling helps break up a flat ceiling line by adding height and variation. A great way to enhance your tray ceiling is to add a wall covering to it. You can wallpaper just to the tray or consider papering the tray and the ceiling inside the tray for a truly dramatic look.
Some people are afraid to wallpaper small spaces for fear the paper will make the room seem smaller, but if you wrap the entire room, including the ceiling, with a simple, patterned wallpaper, the walls will seem to disappear, and the room won’t feel as claustrophobic.
If the ceiling in a small room is too high, a great way to “lower” it is to add wallpaper. Actually, if any room has a ceiling that is too high or too low, wallpaper can easily help solve that problem.
Then there are those extra-large rooms that seem impossible to decorate. That type of room calls for large-scale wallpaper patterns. Another idea for a large room is a textured paper, which will help create a more intimate feeling while still allowing for the large space to feel open.
Wallpaper borders are a great decorating tool. Plus, they are extremely affordable and easy to install. Another great thing about wallpaper borders is that they can be placed just about anywhere on the wall.
Placing a wallpaper border on the ceiling itself can help unify the room. There might be space at the ceiling level for a border, but if there isn’t, putting the border on the ceiling itself will create a more unified look by outlining the room. Just like coloring when you were a kid, outlining the subject always punches up the picture a bit. The same principle can be applied with ceiling borders in a room.
Another idea to consider would be the double border. The double border is just as easy to install and just as inexpensive as one border, but with a double border you can get really creative. Two coordinating or complementary borders can be very pleasing to the eye.
The borders can be placed adjacent, one over the other, or you could put one at the ceiling level and the other at the chair-rail level. One solid border can surround the windows while another patterned border creates a chair rail in the room.
If there is no interesting molding around the doors or doorways, a wallpaper border might be the finishing touch that is needed.
