Attention foodies: It’s time to pick up a copy of the October issue of Gourmet.
Why?
Well, first off, it’s the magazine’s much-anticipated restaurants issue with a list of the 100 best “farm-to-table restaurants in America,” including 10 destinations in Washington and Oregon.
But it’s also an issue focused on champions of eating local, including two awesome women honored for their eat-local efforts — Linda Neunzig, owner of Ninety Farms in Arlington, and chef Holly Smith, owner of Cafe Juanita in Kirkland.
Neunzig, who also works as an agriculture project coordinator for Snohomish County, is pictured in somewhat staged farmer garb on Page 216 in honor of the food she provides local restaurants, including Cafe Juanita. Neunzig, an advocate for local farmers and farmland, supplies Smith and other restaurateurs with heritage breed Katahdin lamb, ethically raised veal and homegrown produce.
On Page 228, you’ll find a beautiful photo and recipe feature on Smith, headlined “The Italian Job.” Smith’s food, photographed in Kirkland earlier this year, looks incredible, certainly good enough to lure one to Kirkland.
If you’re more of your own chef, you’ll also find an amazing menu by Smith that you can recreate at home, all influenced by Smith’s love of Northern Italian food and enhanced by deliveries from Ninety Farms.
Cool.
If you want to know more about Neunzig and Smith’s adventures, including their trip to New York City for a grand culinary event, stay tuned. I’m working on a full story for The Herald’s Food section.
For now, here’s quick look at the other local and regional restaurants featured for their local fare this month in Gourmet — The Herbfarm in Woodinville, Steelhead Diner of Seattle, Le Gourmand of Seattle, Christina’s of Orcas Island and Burgerville locations in Washington and Oregon.
In Portland, the magazine noted Paley’s Place, Vindalho, Fife Restaurant and Higgins Restaurant &Bar. Finally, The Painted Lady of Newberg, Ore., also made the list.
Let’s eat!
