People in southwest Snohomish County who live near streams, lakes or wetlands have the chance to receive a free tree to plant on their property, along with free advice from an ecologist about what other native plants would thrive in their yards and a guidebook about tree care and resources.
The nonprofit Sound Salmon Solutions is offering this deal as a way to encourage property owners to provide homes for birds and clean the waterways that drain into Puget Sound.
Native trees provide privacy, shade, soil erosion protection and homes for wildlife. And they look good, said Kelley Govan of Sound Salmon Solutions. Once established, native plants require very little maintenance.
The free program also is sponsored by WSU Snohomish County Extension, Friends of North Creek Forest and the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
