Event celebrates August’s dog days

An event to help animals and their people is among this week’s possible fun family activities.

In Skagit County, Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic is sponsoring Dog Day Dash 2006, a 5K fun run and walk with your dog.

The event is located at the Port of Skagit County in Burlington. Runners and walkers and their pets, who all start at 10 a.m., will enjoy the well-defined groomed trail system in beautiful Skagit County.

Medals will be presented following the race to the top three overall men, women and children category winners of the fun run. There will be no awards for the non-competitive walking event; however each participant will receive a certificate of completion.

Registration is $30, which includes a T-shirt. Registration time is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

All canine vaccines must be current, and only one dog is allowed per participant. No aggressive dogs or dogs in season will be allowed. Dogs under the age of 6 months are discouraged from participating.

Proceeds from the event will go directly to a local animal rescue organization, SPOT (Saving Pets One at a Time) and Guide Dogs of the Desert International, which provides guide dogs for the visually impaired.

From I-5, exit at Chuckanut Drive (exit 231). Proceed west on Josh Wilson Road. Turn left onto Higgins Airport Way and follow signs to the Dog Day Dash.

Lil’ Critters Pet Photography will be available before and after the race for those choosing to have their pets (and humans) photographed.
