Remember the days when Christmas carolers would stroll the neighborhoods singing yuletide favorites?
You can relive that tradition tonight when 24 members of the Everett Chorale sing a selection of Christmas classics during Everett’s holiday tree lighting and boat parade.
“It will be a traditional sort of caroling, all a cappella,” said Chorale music director Lee Mathews. “It will be reminiscent of door-to-door Christmas caroling done back in the old days but not done so much anymore.”
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. tonight with prime viewing at Port Gardner Landing on W. Marine View Drive or from Grand Avenue park. Santa is expected at 5:45 p.m. followed by the tree lighting at 6 p.m. and decorated boats at 6:30 p.m.
Throughout the event, the Everett Chorale will deliver about 18 songs, sacred and secular, including “Oh, Christmas Tree,” “Deck the Halls,” “Silver Bells” and “Joy to the World.”
“There will be people strolling along the dock and we have hopes of restaurants serving hot chocolate so you get sort of a warm feeling that maybe a lot of us need right now,” Mathews said. “With the bad economy and so many people out of work, this may be a good time for everybody to feel a little bit warm and fuzzy and thankful for all blessings.”
If you miss hearing them tonight, the Everett Chorale’s main concert schedule for 2009 is:
“The Broadway Sing-along”: Feb. 22. A collection of Broadway hits.
“Hosannas &Hallelujah!”: April 4 and 5. Selections from Handel’s “Messiah” and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
“Up, Up and Away”: June 6 and 7. Folk and pop music from across the country.
Season Tickets are $40 and $28; single tickets are $16 and $14. For more information call 425-322-1060 or go to www.everettchorale.org.
