Everett Chorale sings sweet sounds of Broadway

On Sunday, local audiences can give their regards to Broadway.

Everett Chorale, Snohomish County’s 45-year-old vocal ensemble, will hold a “Broadway Sing-along.” The audience is invited to join in to sing some treasured musical theater classics.

“Our audience is the star of this show,” chorale member Diane Giese said. “They get to sing with us.”

During the production, words to all the songs will be broadcast on a big screen on stage and the audience will be accompanied on piano by Kim Croft and directed by chorale conductor Lee Mathews.

And the list of show tunes is a genuine tribute to the Great White Way:

From “Kiss Me Kate,” there’s “Another Opening, Another Show,” which will start off the sing-along.

Then the audience can belt out “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” from “George M!,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” from “The King and I,” selections from “Oklahoma” such as “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top,” and “I Can’t Say No,” along with “Show Boat” favorites “Make Believe” and “Why Do I Love You.”

That’s not all.

The sing-along continues with “To Life,” from “Fiddler on the Roof,” “People” from “Funny Girl,” “Gonna Build a Mountain” from “Stop the World — I Want to Get Off,” “Consider Yourself” from “Oliver,” four songs from “South Pacific,” including “Bali Hai” and “There Is Nothing Like a Dame,” “Over the Rainbow” from “Wizard of Oz” and wraps up with “The Impossible Dream,” from “Man of La Mancha.”

This is the second year the chorale has chosen to do the “Broadway Sing-along” as its only fundraiser for the year and the reasons are twofold: It’s fun and it’s popular, Giese said.

“The Broadway music is recognizable to our audience,” Giese said, “and I think they reminisce back to those productions that they’ve seen.”
