Local classically trained musician Gary Hatle, who ran for Everett mayor in 2001, called me this morning to exclaim about the Everett Philharmonic’s last concert of their 2011 season.
“It was just superb,” Hatle enthused. “They were absolutely at the top of their game.”
The Everett Philharmonic Orchestra played the Everett Civic Auditorium Sunday night and featured Dvorak’s “New World Symphony.”
The concert also featured two young musicians, rising stars in the world of classical music: virtuoso violinist James Garlick and cellist Joshua Roman, who is a former Seattle Symphony principal cellist who landed that job at the age of 22.
“Those two young gentlemen, they were just incredible,” said Hatle, who got a front row seat. “They weren’t trying to outplay each other, they were sensitive and impassioned and what an experience.”
Hatle said he wished every young violinist in the area could have seen these two men play for inspiration. “It was worth living another day to experience that,” Hatle said.
The only suggestion Hatle had was at the end of the concert, instead of an encore of “New World Symphony,” conductor Cobbs should have allowed for a duet between Garlick and Roman, who is also known as a “classical rock star.”
Hatle encouraged more people to go hear the Philharmonic. For the price of $25, it’s one of the best musical deals around.
But you’ll have to wait until next season, which will be posted soon on the website of the Everett Philharmonic.
