Everett band Fauna Shade is set to perform at the Fisherman’s Village Music Festival on Saturday night at Tony V’s Garage.
Bands such as Fauna Shade (“The Shade” joked lead singer Scotty Smith) are the reason the Everett Music Initiative started the festival in the first place. The strength of numerous local bands has been confirmed by their reach into the festival music scene around the country.
Smith and bandmates Richie Owen and Derek Johnston recently returned from a showcase performance at the SXSW (South by Southwest) festival in Austin, Texas, and they have a bunch of high-profile shows coming up this spring.
But for now they are focused on their hometown festival, which Smith jokes should be shortened to “Fishville.”
The band sat down earlier this week to talk about the music they want to hear and about their support of other bands from Snohomish and Island counties.
Their list of must-see acts include their “theatrical” buddy Jake Laundry at 11 tonight at the Black Lab Gallery and Fruit Juice from Olympia at 9:30 tonight at The Anchor Pub. Also tonight, a number of local bands including Sleepwell Citizen, The Moon is Flat and Tellers play at Tony V’s, leading up to the evening finale with Thunderpussy.
Owen’s girlfriend is the drummer in Tangerine, which plays right after Fauna Shade on Saturday. And closing out Saturday night at Tony V’s is the new garage rock band Naked Giants, who Johnston describes as “super cool.” Local bands performing on Saturday include Crystal Desert, I Will Keep Your Ghost and Campion.
On Sunday night, the guys from Fauna Shade expect to be back at Tony V’s to see their friends in Lake, from Whidbey Island. Lead singer Ashley Eriksson wrote the end song to the Cartoon Network show “Adventure Time,” and Lake makes “absolutely beautiful music,” Johnston said. Lake is followed by the much-anticipated sets by Courtney Marie Andrews and Karl Blau. Local acts also playing Sunday include Greet the Sea, Kevin Murphy (of The Moondoggies fame) and The SkyMonkey.
The thing about attending a festival with lots of musical choices, said Johnston, is that nobody is going to go away disappointed.
It’s going to be a good weekend, the guys said.
