Village Theatre in Everett is searching for the next great musical.
The theater company, which has developed such new musicals as “Next to Normal,” “Million Dollar Quartet” and “It Shoulda Been You,” is calling for writers to submit their original musicals to be included in its Festival of New Musicals. The deadline is Aug. 3.
Playwrights can submit a 15-20 page sample and three to five songs of their musical via online submission. Village Theater will reach out for the full script if interested.
Musicals with diverse stories, experiences, musical styles, forms, content and points of view are encouraged.
New musicals must follow this criteria to be considered:
It must be a musical. No plays, plays with music, operas or children’s theater works will be accepted.
Writers of all experience levels are encouraged to submit, but works must be well-written.
At least three demo recordings of songs must be available. The tracks don’t need to be high quality, but must have clear lyrics, melody and accompaniment.
A full-length script of at least 80 minutes must be available upon request.
All content must either be wholly original, based on work in the public domain or the playwrights must have underlying rights and/or permissions to use any pre-existing material. No exceptions.
The musical must still be in development. Shows that have appeared on Broadway or are licensed by a major licensing house will not be accepted.
A title page is not needed. Sample scripts longer than 20 pages will not be reviewed. Only digital submissions will be accepted. Hard copy submissions will be returned unopened.
The Festival of New Musicals is scheduled for Aug. 10-12. Now in its 18th year, the festival will feature five new musicals. The musicals are presented in staged readings. They are rehearsed presentations of new work, performed and directed by regional theater professionals.
