EVERETT — In recognition of National Farmers Market Week this week, the online consumer health site BetterDoctor.com has released a list of its top 25 farmers markets in the nation.
Everett’s Sunday market on the waterfront came in at No. 7 on the site’s list of top community-oriented markets. Tacoma’s market was No. 6.
Everett Farmers Market was listed in part for its discounts to low-income elderly and those on the Women, Infants and Children program, and for its general help to consumers, such as distributing recipes for fresh produce and its blog.
It probably didn’t hurt that the market is a beautiful one, located along the waterfront at 1600 W. Marine View Drive. Hours at the market are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 18. More about the market is available at everettfarmersmarket.net or www.facebook.com/TheEverettFarmersMarket.
The consumer health website noted that most of its top 25 markets are located in coastal cities, the number of farmers markets has quadrupled since 1994 and more than 2,000 new farmers markets have popped up since 2010. Freshly picked, in-season produce is at its peak in flavor and nutrition, the website said.
Here’s the list of the top 10 farmers markets:
Worcester, Massachusetts; Lansing, Michigan; Berkeley, California; Rochester, New York; Columbia, South Carolina; Tacoma; Everett; Green Bay, Wisconsin; Portland, Oregon; Cleveland, Ohio. Bellevue’s market came in at No. 17 and Seattle at No. 24.
