In honor of Father’s Day last weekend, we assembled a list of our favorite TV fathers.
We asked you to send us your lists. Most people took issue with our disregard for Jim Anderson from “Father Knows Best,” portrayed by Robert Young.
One reader even kindly supposed that we neglected Jim because we are too young to remember “Father Knows Best.” We know we are not.
Sandy McKibbon in Arlington and others mentioned another dad we considered: Ozzie Nelson. She suggested that “Ozzie and Harriet” might have been the first reality show.
Camano Island reader Brian Levin voted for Dr. Alex Stone of “The Donna Reed Show,” played by Carl Betz. He also reminded us of a conversation from the movie “Tin Men.”
It was something like “How realistic was ‘Bonanza’? A 50-year-old father with three 47-year-old sons.” Good point.
Frank Rypka of Snohomish and Floyd Ply of Arlington thought Lucas McCain from “The Rifleman,” played by Chuck Connors, was a top dad. They both talked about what a good role model he was.
And Arlene Horne added these names to our list: Howard Cunningham from “Happy Days” (Tom Bosley): Kept Richie and the Fonz in line; Tim Taylor of “Home Improvement” (Tim Allen): His many accidents taught his kids what NOT to do; John Walton of “The Waltons” (Ralph Waite): A caring, hard-working father; and Eric Camden from “Seventh Heaven” (Stephen Collins): A religious father who helped his large family and his community.
