The Driftwood Players will be presenting eight short plays during the theater’s first ever “Festival of Shorts.”
Earlier in the year, Driftwood asked for playwrights to submit entries for this festival of new works that were between 10 and 15 minutes long.
Driftwood was flooded with submissions — more than 87 from across the country and Canada — and a readers committee chose eight profound, innovative and funny pieces that represent the best in American play writing, according to Driftwood’s website.
The lineup of eight finalists:
“A Womb with a View,” by Rich Orloff, of New York
“The Art of Love, American Masters,” by Kevin Six, of California
“People Like Us,” by Chris Shaw Swanson, of Ohio
“A Very Lovely Dress,” by D. Richard Tucker, of Kent
“Seldom is Heard,” by Mary Steelsmith, of California
“Coming Clean,” by Ann Teplick, of Seattle
“Birth,” by David Alan Morrison, of Seattle
“The End of a Perfect Game,” by Jay Rehak, of Illinois
“Festival of Shorts” will be presented at 8 tonight and Saturday at Driftwood Players Wade James Theatre, 950 Main St., Edmonds.
Tickets are $10. Call 425-774-9600 or go to www.driftwoodplayers.com.
Shakespeare in the park: It’s summer and time for the Seattle Shakespeare Company’s Wooden O team to take the Bard out on the road for several free public performances in Snohomish County.
This year, the two Shakespeare productions will be “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Othello.”
Shakespeare’s “Othello” is a tale of deception. After the high-ranking general Othello bypasses Iago for a promotion, the cunning manipulator enacts his revenge. Iago paints a false vision of Othello’s faithful wife, Desdemona, which leads to a murderous fit of jealousy, according to press material.
In “Much Ado About Nothing,” the women welcome their victorious men from war and are ready for romance until a jealous brother sets a devastating lie in motion. Then rivals Beatrice and Benedick must join forces to save the honor of an innocent girl, according to press material.
All Wooden O productions are free. Reservations and tickets are not needed. Arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the show to secure a good spot on the lawn. Food, blankets and chairs are all allowed.
