The annual Arlington Fly-In takes off again Wednesday for five days of air shows, displays of military machines and restored aircraft, and lots of exhibits, enough to satisfy any flying fanatic.
One of the highlights of this year’s fly-in will be flights and tours of the B-17 Sentimental Jour
ney aircraft from the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force out of Mesa, Ariz.
According to the Commemorative Air Force website, a B-17G aircraft was donated to the CAF in the 1970s and a contest was started to name the plane. Ultimately the name “Sentimental Journey” won out and pinup darling Betty Grable was painted on the bomber’s nose.
Another highlight that parents should note is Wednesday’s opening day is Kid’s Day and all kids get in free with an accompanying adult.
Kid’s activities begin at 9 a.m., with an air show planned for noon. Other family friendly events throughout the day include flight simulators, candy airplane making, face painting, helicopter demonstrations, “bubble mania” and robotics demonstrations.
Other events and exhibits planned during the five day fly-in include:
•A weapons display — including tank demonstrations — billed as the largest ever in the Pacific Northwest.
A full-scale reproduction of a 1933 Stinson Model O, or Senior Trainer, which is the only open cockpit aircraft ever produced by Stinson.
Biplane rides in a 1930 New Standard biplane “Stanley” which holds four adults.
Carl Bergey will be a guest speaker July 8. Bergey helped develop two U.S. general aviation aircraft, the Piper PA-28 Cherokee series and the Commander 112 and 114 series, according to his biography.
Gates opens at 8 a.m. daily and close at 6 p.m. July 6 and 7, 8 p.m. July 8 and 9 and 2 p.m. July 10 at the Arlington Airport, 4700 188th St. NE.
Adult admission is $15 Wednesday and Thursday, $18 Friday, Saturday and Sunday or $40 for a weekly pass. Discounts available if purchased online. Children 15 and under are free. For more information go to www.arlingtonflyin.org.
