Follow your nose

Step into Debbie Moerke’s parlor at Scentsations in Arlington and give your senses a treat.

The shop is filled with subtle and exotic fragrances such as Cleopatra, cool citrus basil, cabernet and white tea/ginger – all available in an array of unique candle designs by Moerke – as well as original gift and home decor items by local and Pacific Northwest artists.

Moerke, owner of Scentsations with husband, Richard, has turned her passion for candlemaking into a small business on West Avenue, just a block west of downtown Arlington’s Olympic Avenue shopping area.

In addition to the candles and gift items, look for a wide selection of bath products for children and adults, jewelry and apparel, prints and greeting cards.

And if you find a candle design you like, but want it in a different scent, Moerke is happy to oblige with custom orders. Votives are $1.45 each or a package of nine for $10.95; other candle prices vary depending on size and design.

Scentsations is at 114 S. West Ave., Arlington; 360-435-6286. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Patriotic pyres: Moerke’s creations include these subtly scented red, white and blue candles, perfect for the Fourth of July, in round pillar $10.95, star and heart $5.95, and votives $1.45 each.

Carved elegance: These carved candles by Dancing Star Candles of Olympia are $17.95 and come in an array of designs and colors.

Abracadabra: Wave these magic ribbon and reed wands to fill your home with a soft lavender scent. The wands are handmade by Moerke and filled with locally grown lavender; $12.95 each.

Glass with class: Marysville artist Erica Jacobson, a college student, lends her talent to a variety of handpainted glass pieces. The palm tree martini and strawberry daiquiri glasses are $8.95 each.

Wallflowers: Annie Bartolome of Everlasting Floral &Gifts on Camano Island created these Victorian wall adornments. The cone arrangement is $34.95; the flat metal container piece is $18.95.

Curly Tops Cypress (Chamaecyparis pisfiera), a modern version of the old Boulevard Cypress, is one I chose years ago and still enjoy. Great blue color and interesting twisted needles add texture to boot. This is a smaller grower, maturing to perhaps 10-feet tall and 8-feet wide, but it will take some shearing if needed.
