The 5th Avenue Theatre announced its new schedule for the theater’s 30th anniversary season with a list of seven productions that represents a mix of premieres, the hottest shows from Broadway and some golden classics.
The shows are:
“In the Heights”: A current Broadway hit, winner of four 2008 Tony Awards and the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, will open the 2010-11 season on Sept. 28. It’s the story of Washington Heights in Manhattan, a community on the brink of change.
“A Christmas Story—The Musical!”: This holiday show, based on the 1983 movie, opens Nov. 30. It’s the 1940s, and Ralph Parker dreams of a receiving a Red Ryder air rifle for Christmas.
“Vanities: A New Musical”: The story follows three best friends as they make the transition from high school cheerleaders in the 1960s to sorority sisters, housewives and liberated women. The show, a collaboration with ACT Theatre, opens Feb. 4, 2011.
“Next to Normal”: A Broadway hit, the story is about a family trying to take of itself and its members. The play opens Feb. 22, 2011.
“9 to 5: The Musical”: Adapted from the film, this show features the movie’s title tune and 18 new original songs by Dolly Parton and tells the story of three overworked and harassed secretaries who turn the tables on their chauvinistic boss. The show opens April 5, 2011.
“Guys &Dolls”: A classic story of a New York gambler and an inner-city missionary who fall for each other, loaded with memorable songs including “Luck Be a Lady,” “Bushel And A Peck,” “If I Were A Bell,” “Sue Me” and “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ The Boat.” It opens May 14, 2011.
“Oklahoma!”: The musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein won the Pulitzer Price in 1944 with a cast of memorable characters and songs, including “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” and “Surrey with the Fringe on Top.” It opens July 10, 2011.
