Music programs may be facing tough challenges in the schools, but the Sno-King Music Educators are making sure kids get the training they need to keep the beat going.

And the public gets to benefit from that effort.

Following a day-long workshop, young musicians will perform for free at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N., Edmonds. Doors open at 7 p.m. The program will last about 70 to 80 minutes.

At the concert, performers will include a participating middle school band, orchestra and choir students who represent their schools in the Sno-King Music Educators’ Middle School Honor Festival.

Sno-King Music Educators is the regional branch of the Washington Music Educators Association. Part of their mission is to promote access to music education for Washington state students, kindergarten through the 12th grade.

During the day-long workshop, students will use the Edmonds Center for the Arts to rehearse and perform, including the center’s gymnasium, classroom and lobby spaces, and the stage in the theater. As they work, they will receive feedback from local conductors and music educators, according to a press release.

Over the next three months and the course of six workshops through March, more than 4,200 middle and high school students will receive instruction and critique on a variety of areas including: presentation of a unified ensemble sound, intermediate and advanced concepts in vocal and instrumental technique, and new ideas for creating a more expressive performance.
