1. Solar specs
Get some cool glasses and crank up some Pink Floyd. The so-called Great American Total Eclipse will darken skies from Oregon to South Carolina on Aug. 21.
Snohomish Library is among the libraries nationwide offering free eclipse glasses. Sno-Isle Libraries has solar eclipse-related programming at 16 of the 22 community libraries between July 23 and Aug. 21. A limited number of eclipse glasses will be available at each program.

2. Battery boost
You come back to the parking garage after a long day or week away of fun … and your car is stone cold dead.
This happened to me in downtown Seattle. After I admired the quick-charge battery device used by the roadside assistance guy named Fred — who took three hours to get there — he told me I could buy a smaller one for about $60. It also charges cell phones and laptops, he said.
Fred was spot on. (He also told me I left the dome light on.)
I found the Winplus Lithium Jump Starter and Portable Power Bank at Costco. The unit comes with jumper cables, has two USB ports, a flashlight and fits in the glove box. It claims it can be recharged up to 1,000 times.
Still, it’s never a good idea to leave the dome light on.
3. Kids cash
Take your kids to the mall on Friday and let them earn their own cash while learning about healthy eating habits, gardening and exercise.
KERNEL, which stands for Kids Eating Right Nutrition and Exercise for Life, is at the Friday Farmers Market at the Everett Mall from 3 to 7 p.m. on Fridays through Sept. 8. After each day’s activity, kids get $2 KERNEL cash to use at the market in the northwest corner of the mall parking lot between Sears and Famous Dave’s.
