Two network announcements today made me smile.
First, HBO announced that in addition to the 12-episode sixth season of “The Sopranos” that is going to premiere in March, the network has secured eight more bonus episodes that will air as a seventh season that will start in January 2007.
It’s a long time to wait, but we’re used to waiting for Tony and the gang by now, aren’t we?
“We are obviously delighted that we will be able to extend ‘The Sopranos’ series beyond its slated 12 episodes,” said Chris Albrecht, HBO’s chairman and CEO. “When something is as remarkable as ‘The Sopranos,’ our audience would like to see it continue as long as possible, so we are thrilled that David Chase felt there are more stories to be told.”
“With every season, this series continues to creatively evolve and grow,” executive producer said Brad Grey said. “We are all looking forward to spending more time with ‘The Sopranos.’”
In other news, “The Contender,” which followed 16 aspiring middleweight boxers on NBC earlier this year but was canceled despite decent ratings, landed a second season on ESPN. The new season will debut in April.
