What: Rhododendron “PJM Elite,” commonly referred to as hybrid rhododendron, is the best of the many “PJM” cultivars available in nurseries. In early spring, this small-leaved evergreen shrub is covered in a profusion of deep red-purple flowers — definitely a harbinger of the season! The aromatic foliage often changes to almost a mahogany color when the temperature becomes colder and provides striking wintertime interest.
Where: This rhododendron is easy to grow in the Pacific Northwest. Plant it in rich and well-drained or sandy soil in a location with full sun to light or open shade.
Size: “PMJ Elite” will grow to be 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide when mature.
Care: Rhododendrons are shallow-rooted plants, requiring regular watering during dry weather. Faded flowers can be removed to give a cleaner look, and new growth can be pinched to help make young plants bushier. Adult root weevils can chew on their leaves, but this is less of a problem on plants that receive more light and regular watering.
