What: In mid-winter, a profusion of large, single pale-pink flowers with prominent central yellow tufts of stamens dot this large, dark evergreen shrub. This is a vigorous grower with upright branches that become gracefully pendulous with age, giving a better view of the flowers at bloom time. As an added bonus, the faded blooms drop, unlike many of the Japanese camellias.
Where: This late-winter-flowering camellia will grow best in light and open shade, or in full sun out of hot, reflected heat. If planted in too much shade, flowering is greatly reduced. A sheltered location near the house will help protect open flowers from hard frosts.
Size: Reaches 8 feet high by 8 feet wide in 10 years.
Care: Camellias prefer a rich, well-drained soil with regular watering during dry weather, especially in late summer to ensure a strong flower bud set for the winter bloom.
