Jack-o-Nuts Porter, Whitewall Brewing, Marysville
Style: pumpkin porter
Stats: 8.0 percent ABV
Available: On tap at the brewery
My thoughts: Marysville’s Whitewall Brewing has gone with tremendous change over the past nine months, including adding nearly twice the square footage to the brewery, 14524 Smokey Point Blvd.
One thing that hasn’t changed is this tasty fall treat. Brewed on the base of its Truck Nuts Porter, Jack-o-Nuts Porter is a sweet and roasty pumpkin beer perfect for that long night spent answering the door to hand out Snickers to the neighborhood kids.
Pouring a dark brown with the roasty nose of the brewery’s porter, it has a real sweet touch in the middle of the flavor profile and malty finish. The sweetness likely comes from the 60 pounds of pumpkin purée and oven-roasted and brown-sugar coated squash.
Another recent release by Whitewall is its Dually Double IPA. Made with a ton of different hops, and then dry hopped with Equinox and Citra hops, it has a strong citrus nose and a sharp bitter finish. Both the Dually and Jack-o-Nuts Porter are more than 8 percent ABV, so they thankfully are served in 12-ounce tulip glasses.
As for their new space, co-owners Sean Wallner and Aaron Wight said that the brewhouse space is mostly finished, with a new glycol chiller and the rest of the new large cooler yet to be completed.
Within the next month, Whitewall is hoping to install a new seating area (where the brewhouse was formerly located), unveil an extended portion of the bar and open up 10 more taps. If they keep brewing beers like the two I tasted this past week, Wallner and Wight will have plenty of folks to fill those seats.
From the brewery: “We jacked up our house Porter and added 60 pounds of pumpkin, roasted squash, brown sugar and a touch of spice in the boil.”
