Whether you fly in or take the ferry to San Juan Island, visit the airport July 24 for the first Friday Harbor Airport Fly-in and Open House.
Arrive early for a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. and stick around for a flying search and rescue demonstration presented by Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, a Coast Guard helicopter arriving for display, and a fly-by and arrival by the Blackjacks Squadron, to name a few fly-in visitors. There will be even UFOs on hand: United Flying Octogenarians.
Hang out at the hangars and see a National Geographic film shot on San Juan Island by Ken and Suzanne Franklin, starring their peregrine falcon Frightful. Or maybe you want to see aircraft projects in progress by the Experimental Aircraft Association. Hands-on activities include a working flight simulator for pilots and paper-airplane making for the kids.
Outside there will be many different planes on display, and, of course, food and souvenirs. Activities wind down about 4 p.m.
Whether you arrive by air or land, the admission and parking are free.
