Garden market: The Edmonds Museum Garden Market opens Saturday, featuring vegetable starts, bedding plants and nursery stock.

The market is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through June 26. This year’s summer market starts July 3.

In addition, local farm products will be available for sale and local artisans will sell outdoor garden art and living products.

The market is located at Centennial Plaza’s Public Safety Building parking lot at Fifth and Bell in downtown Edmonds.

Container contest: The Arlington Garden Club, in celebration of their 70th year as a club, is sponsoring a container contest open to all amateur gardeners.There are three categories: small containers (under 12 inches in diameter), large containers (12 inches and above), and hanging containers. All containers must be planted by the person who enters it. The judging will be done at the Arlington Garden Club’s Garden Party Celebration to be held on July 24 in Arlington.

One prize of $50 will be awarded in each of the three categories. A special prize will be awarded to the winner of the People’s Choice Award which covers all three categories. There’s a $2 per container entrance fee.

Call for entries: The Arts Council of Snohomish County is seeking artwork for an upcoming exhibit, “Art of the Garden,” a biannual exhibit. Work in all mediums will be accepted. Work is to be delivered 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 19 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21. Artists must submit slides or photographs with a stamped, self-addressed envelope by June 2 to: Carie Collver, 1507 Wall St., Everett, WA 98201, or e-mail ccollver@artscouncilofsnoco.org. Amateur gardeners: Molbak’s is now accepting entries for its amateur Spring 2004 Garden Makeover Contest.

Customers are invited to compete in the seasonal garden contest by showcasing their improved gardens through the use of plants, colors and techniques.

To enter, garden enthusiasts must reside in King, Snohomish, Pierce or Kitsap counties. Submit an entry form and photos of the garden’s transformation by May 23. Molbak’s will accept prints and digital images.

Gardens will be critiqued on overall design, dramatic before and after changes, and effective use of space, color, texture and plant combinations. The makeover area must be at least 50 square feet and completed no earlier than January 2003.

One grand prize winner will be awarded a $500 Molbak’s gift certificate and two finalists will receive a $100 gift certificate.

Merit tickets: The fourth annual Gardens of Merit Tour is scheduled for June 26 and will benefit the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens at Legion Park.

This year’s tour features seven privately owned gardens within Everett, each reflecting the personal style of its owner. The arboretum will also have live musical entertainment, plant sales and a raffle.

Tickets will be available in late May for $10. Tickets also will be available for a guided bus tour with Steve Smith, the “Whistlin’ Gardener” and owner of Sunnyside Gardens in Marysville. Tickets for the guided tour are $30 and include a box lunch.

Home garden competition: The Pacific Northwest Gardens Competition for home gardeners is accepting entries from gardeners in King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties, and Bainbridge Island.

Prizes include travel packages to London and San Francisco, $500 cash and $100 gift certificates from Swanson’s Nursery.

Deadline for entry is June 14.

Bainbridge in Bloom: Tickets for the 16th annual Bainbridge in Bloom are available at a discounted price through Saturday.

The event is July 10 and 11 and features a tour of five Bainbridge Island gardens and an art fair.

Purchase advance tickets for $25 and $12 for ages 4 to 12. After Saturday, tickets are $30 and $15 for ages 4 to 12.

Smart women: Briggs &Stratton invites yard smart women to enter its “America’s Most Yard Smart Woman” contest.

Women who care for their yards are invited to participate in the contest which will name one woman the most yard savvy. The grand prize winner will be selected based on a 200-word or less essay on why she should be crowned “America’s Most Yard Smart Woman” based on her yard care skills and achievements.

One grand prize-winner will receive a trip to Europe and an array of yard care equipment from Briggs &Stratton.

Four runners-up will win their choice of a lawn mower, power washer or generator.

Contestants should mail their name, address and phone number, as well as an e-mail address if available, along with a 200-word or less description of why they should be named America’s Most Yard Smart Woman to: “Yard Smart Woman Contest,” P.O. Box 8, Germantown, WI 53022.

All entries must be postmarked by Oct. 15.

Whidbey Island tour: The ninth annual Whidbey Island Garden Tour is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 26.

The tour stops at six private gardens on Whidbey Island including an organic farm and a homestead.

Tickets are $20, $10 ages 12 and younger.
