Talk dirty: The Snohomish County Fruit Society is hosting a presentation on “Bringing Our Soil Back to Life” at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 via Zoom. David Montgomery, a University of Washington professor and geomorphologist, will talk about the potential for regenerative farming practices to reshape agriculture. Grass alternatives: Tired of mowing the lawn? The Snohomish Conservation District is hosting a “Alternatives to Lawn” webinar from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 14 via Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to you with registration. Stop the battle against moss by discovering some alternatives to lawn. Whether you’re a renter or an owner, you will learn about eco-friendly ideas to keep your lawn area healthy. Register for the webinar at snohomishcd.org.
Allen Creek Show and Tell: Stop by Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road, Marysville, from 10 a.m. to noon to speak with a Snohomish Conservation District employee about the work being done to restore Allen Creek. The creek is listed as an impaired stream by the Washington Department of Ecology. Its low dissolved oxygen levels can be lethal to fish. Learn how you can bring some of the district’s restorative efforts to your yard. More at snohomishcd.org.
Rain garden tour: Make a date to go on a self-guided rain garden tour in Everett, followed by a Q&A on these alternatives to lawn that filter stormwater. The Snohomish Conservation District is hosting a “Everett Rain Gardens Q&A” webinar from noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 21 via Zoom. A Zoom link and a map of historic rain gardens in north Everett will be emailed to you with registration. These gardens do all the work in your yard by collecting, absorbing and filtering the rain that runs off your roof. Register for the webinar at snohomishcd.org.
Tour the arboretum: Still playing it safe? You can tour the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens virtually. Go to www.evergreenarboretum.com and click on the Virtual Tour tab. View dozens of photos of the sculpture garden, rock garden, Japanese maple grove, conifer garden, small urban tree walk and more. Or tour the gardens by appointment in groups no larger than five. Plan you tour one month in advance and make an appointment by calling 425-257-8597 or emailing contactus@evergreenarboretum.com.
