The Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest sent out a press release today reminding people to be prepared for severe weather.
The tips are, of course, relevant to the current storm system but they also are good advice for all winter travel in the forest.
A few highlights:
- Trees are more likely than usual to be uprooted in strong winds because heavy rains have saturated the soils recently.
- Roads or trails may be extremely sloppy. It’s best to change your plans to avoid particularly muddy routes. You can avoid getting stuck and you won’t damage the roads or trails.
- Bring emergency supplies, including proper tires, chains and a shovel.
- Think ahead. How would you deal if a tree blocked the road you were on?
- Road and trail conditions change quickly. You can get current information by calling the district offices and checking online.
