Today’s fast and fresh Eco Geek tip comes from The Daily Green, which has a handy-dandy, must-rest list of Top 10 Idiot-Proof Eco-Tips.
If you’re waiting in the drive-thru at the bank of fast food restaurant, sitting at a draw bridge or waiting for a dead-stop highway accident to clear, don’t let your car idle for more than 10 seconds.
According to The Daily Green: Idling for more than 10 seconds wastes more gas than is needed for startup. Overall, Americans idle away 2.9 billion gallons of gas a year, worth around $78.2 billion.
Also: Every moment you spend idling your car’s engine means needlessly wasting gas, as well as rougher wear on your vehicle.
If you can avoid getting into situations that force you to idle, do it. That includes skipping the fast food joint, probably not the most earth-friendly food, and going into the bank or Starbucks to do your business.
