Kamiak, Monroe take home high school musical awards

Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre honored four Snohomish County schools in a Tony Awards-like ceremony.

Kamiak High School took home two 5th Avenue Awards on Monday for its production of “Spamalot,” while Monroe High School captured an award for its staging of “Guys and Dolls.”

The 5th Avenue Awards — the theater equivalent of a high school state sports tournament — honors top musical theater productions throughout the state. No school swept the Tony Awards-like ceremony at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre, with just two high schools taking home two awards each.

Kamiak received awards for outstanding choreography and outstanding costume design, tying for highest number of awards with Tahoma High School, which took home the top award of outstanding overall musical for its production of “Tarzan.” The Maple Valley school also won the award for outstanding stage crew.

Monroe received honors for outstanding music direction.

Kamiak and Monroe had both received nominations for outstanding overall musical. Kamiak took a total of eight nominations and five honorable mentions, while Monroe collected seven nominations and seven honorable mentions.

This school year, theater professionals toured the state, watching nearly 120 musical theater productions at 95 high schools, including 18 shows at schools in Snohomish County. More than 10,000 students participated in this year’s competition.

Glacier Peak (“Tarzan”) and Meadowdale (“Legally Blonde”) high schools also were honored. Meadowdale received the special award for outstanding parent support, and Meadowdale’s Kateara Utley and Glacier Peak’s Erik Ortiz won special awards for student achievement.

Winners picked up their awards at the 16th annual 5th Avenue Awards Honoring High School Musical Theater.

Other Snohomish County high schools nominated for 5th Avenue Awards were Arlington, Archbishop Murphy, Edmonds Heights, Everett, Jackson, Lake Stevens, Lynnwood, Marysville Pilchuck, Mountlake Terrace, Stanwood and Sultan.

Here are the Snohomish County high school winners, their shows and the 5th Avenue Awards they received:

Kamiak, “Spamalot”: Outstanding choreography and outstanding costume design.

Monroe, “Guys and Dolls”: Outstanding music direction.

Glacier Peak, “Tarzan”: Special award to Erik Ortiz for student achievement.

Meadowdale, “Legally Blonde”: Special awards to Kateara Utley for student achievement and outstanding parent support.
