Kids’ craft kits

Craft kits for children make great holiday gifts and will also help to fill a few of those vacation days before the young folks go back to school.

We found a couple of kits that may appeal to young sculptors and seamstresses.

The Sculpey “Clay Babies” kit, a neat package of colored polymer clay, tools and easy-to-follow instructions, contains enough materials to make a variety of clay critters, including a duckling, puppy, dinosaur and frog.

Animal characters are created from simple-to-make shapes and can be made into jewelry or other trinkets when completed.

Some adult supervision will be required for this project, and be sure to read the package instructions when it comes to baking the clay. Some clays can be baked in your regular oven, but others suggest using an oven reserved for clay baking only.

The “Make Your Own Teddy Bear” kit we found is basically the same as the bean bag kit we featured in a Craft Corner column earlier this year. It contains pre-cut felt pieces, stuffing, yarn and needle for seams and adornments.

This is a great gift for youngsters interested in learning about sewing and fabric arts, and provides instruction and practice in the basics required for these skills.

We found the “Clay Babies” kit at an art supply store and the teddy bear kit at a craft store, but it will be best to call your local craft, art or toy store – or go online – to find a supplier in your neighborhood.

Most children’s craft kits cost between $10 and $15 for a good-quality product.
